Mining Valleys
where coal shaped Asturias’ memory and identity
Feel the transformation of a land that shaped the world from deep below.
In the heart of the Nalón and Caudal valleys, the Asturias Mining Valleys speak of progress, sacrifice and transformation.Once one of the most industrialized regions in Spain, coal and steel drove its economy for generations. Today they are living memory, reinvented heritage, and a destination where understanding the past becomes a deeply human experience.
The emblematic museums: the MUMI (Mining and Industry Museum in El Entrego) and the MUSI (Steel Museum in La Felguera) — tell the story of mines and factories from the inside, through real objects, structures and testimonies. At the Samuño Mining EcoMuseum, a train takes you to an intact underground gallery, one of the most complete in Spain. And at the Pozo Sotón, you can descend more than 500 m underground accompanied by former professional miners.
In Bustiello (a symbol of Asturian industrial paternalism), the idealized workers’ housing estate has become a cultural landmark declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Meanwhile, the Protected Landscape of the Mining Valleys, with its beech, oak and chestnut forests dominated by Peña Mea, reminds us that nature and industry can coexist.
Today these valleys welcome local artisans, workshops, cultural enterprises, guided tours and immersive mining experiences. Because here it is not just about tourism: it is about understanding a world that evolved through the effort and ingenuity of its people.
From the tracks of the mining train to the craftsman’s hands, every corner of the Mining Valleys keeps stories waiting to be lived.
